The essence of luxury, shagreen is an exotic leather traditionally derived from ray or shark skin, with a distinctive pearl grain and texture. It owes its name to Jean-Claude Galluchat, an 18th-century master sheath-maker who popularized its use in the French decorative arts.
In high-end cabinetmaking, shagreen is mainly used for sheathing, to cover flat or curved surfaces with precision. It can be found on table tops, drawer fronts, wall panels or even in inlays. This material demands a specific technique: its installation requires patience, the right tools and a keen eye for detail.
What makes shagreen so noble is its rarity, the complexity of its application and, above all, its incomparable finish. Its satiny, slightly grainy surface catches the light in a unique way, bringing a discreet but immediately recognizable refinement.
At Eben&Or, we like to work it in contrast with deep woods or cold materials such as metal. It is the perfect embodiment of the balance between raw nature and extreme sophistication. In bespoke furniture, shagreen becomes a signature element, between tradition of excellence and contemporary design.
A unique creation always begins with an encounter.
